The Sapmi Series > Artist Statement the sapmi series developed out of a recognition of separation being limited to people's minds; the eternal existence of life being boundless and all-encompassing. aina is an expression of encouragement for people to take on responibility for their life, for their personal evolution. concepts of historical and physical displacement form an important part of the post-colonial conflicts in today's contemporary social debates. as the root of these emotional conflicts seem to remain unaddressed, my work deals with spiritual displacement as the primary pretext to this current condition. everyone of us might be more 'dis-placed' than we realise: in our day-to-day life any engagement with our reality is oftentimes limited to purely reactionary behaviour and therefore we neglect to see our actions in the context of a whole life. habitually, we not only miss the chance to use this occurrence to our greatest advantage, but might all too often even turn it into another burden to carry. alternatively, seemingly small events could be recognized to actually hold a major significance in a life episode's atmosphere, or misfortunes could be dealt with more efficiently if their actual importance over time were re-assessed. the white landscape is a as space without direction, a blank canvas for us to project our minds into: devoid of preconceived ideas, definitions of right and wrong, existence and non-existence: the responsibility for our destiny lies fundamentally with ourselves. a shift of perception is required to navigate through the images: things might not be as they appear at first; colours slowly appearing and disappearing with time. we are required to take on absolute responsibility for ourselves: choosing to place ourselves in life by ceasing to unconsciously dis-place our experiences and seeing them and therefore ourselves in the larger picture - in context. october 2005 |
