The Incantations Series > Artist Statement

the permanence of the land resonates with the weathering names
and we are close to disconcerting realisations of our fleeting human experience.
is it fear of obliviation that motivates some to inscribe the land?
wesley stacey, 1993

man has a tendency to leave signs and traces in the natural and urban world to make himself remembered: 'i was here, do not forget me!'

names that have been written into rocks and walls – yet over time all words slowly erode, become unreadable signs
without meaning.

these images are poetic reminders of the temporariness of life itself:

they witness a longing for not being forgotten, yet they also remind us of the illusionary desire to find permanence and meaning within the constant change of this material world.

are we aware of the possibilities of finding meaning within our own personal evolution, together with the subsequent prospects to be truly remembered by the world, for our actions?

might this recognition aid us in living in the 'absolute now'?
