The Darks Series > Artist Statement the dark series is an investigation of our relation towards nature in consideration of our immediate responsibility toward it. how do we define our position as human beings in this world, claiming to be the highest evolved species of all? if it is legitimate to consider ourselves the highest evolved species on this planet or not is not so much a question i am concerned with, but more how we live up to our chosen stand. if we see ourselves in line with all other beings we will most likely choose to treat them respectfully out of recognition of equality and subsequent interdependence. this understanding of interdependence between every living thing is not superfulous in the mindset of existent evolutionary superiority of humans, but more so is fundamental to it: if we have the mental capacity to comprehend the effect of trees and plants on the quality of the air we breathe, why do we extinguish acres of them every hour? if we have the technological and logistical skill to supply nations with food and shelter of superior quality, why do we make use of antiquated unsustainable processes which will deplete our resources? if we have the intuitive understanding of pain caused by the premature death of any being, why do we choose not to acknowledge our resulting feelings before they can even start to develop - and do subsequently kill? as we might have the capacity to roam on higher mental planes, we still behave like a child on its first day out on the playground. let's show, practise and feel responsibility for what immediately sustains us. let's grow up. |
